About Humane Education

The Society is very involved with humane education in the schools. In March of 1917, the humane education bill was passed by Congress and it states that every school must have humane education as part of its curriculum. We support this bill by providing comprehensive presentations to all schools in Lewis County and in the Adirondack School District.

Our Humane Education educational program includes rabies education and prevention, animal bite prevention, domestic violence and animal cruelty as well as pet care. To help the students better understand how to handle animals, Cliff brings one of our Humane Education animals with him to the classroom. These animals include Carl the rabbit, Angel the guinea pig, Nacho the rat, or Mister and Missy the ferrets.

Remember to teach children to ask the owner's permission before petting a strange animal and to never touch a dead animal or a dog that has been eating a dead animal.

There are several kid-friendly websites for the animal lover out there. We have found a few that we think might be of interest to you. For the kids the ASPCA has a fun website located at www.animalland.org. Another sight for the kids with some good reference material for teachers is www.kindnews.org. There is even a very interesting sight for the teen animal lover at www.humaneteen.org. Check them out!
